Excessive sweating, technically known as hyperhidrosis, is a chronic disorder characterized by increased sweating. It most commonly affects the armpits, hands, face, and soles of the feet. The condition can negatively impact the quality of life. It often causes emotional, social, and professional difficulties. Fortunately, general and aesthetic medicine doctors today have many methods to treat excessive sweating. Find out what excessive sweating treatment entails at Dr. Parda Clinic in Piaseczno and get rid of the problem before summer comes.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweat production, exceeding the amount needed to maintain normal body temperature. Hyperhidrosis most commonly affects areas where so-called eccrine sweat glands are concentrated, namely the armpits, hands, face, and soles of the feet.

Excessive sweating occurs in about 1-3% of the population. It occurs with similar frequency in women and men. It most commonly affects only the armpits (30-50% of cases). The symptoms of the disorder hinder daily functioning. They can affect mental and physical health as well as social, school, or professional activities.

What are the types and causes of hyperhidrosis?

Doctors distinguish the following types of excessive sweating:

  • Primary hyperhidrosis: is not associated with accompanying diseases. Its exact cause remains unknown. It is believed that genetic, environmental, and emotional factors play a role in the development of this problem. Symptoms of primary hyperhidrosis worsen during stress or anxiety, in high temperatures, during physical exertion, after eating spicy food, and due to the use of stimulants,
  • Secondary hyperhidrosis: results from certain conditions and diseases (mainly neurological). It can also be a consequence of using certain medications, e.g., antidepressants.

Ways to treat hyperhidrosis

The treatment of hyperhidrosis depends on the type and severity of the disorder. The therapy is tailored individually to the needs of the specific patient. In the case of secondary excessive sweating, the coexisting disease is treated if possible.

Recommended by doctors, the methods for primary hyperhidrosis include:

  • lifestyle changes (diet modification, giving up stimulants),
  • topical use of antiperspirants (mainly with aluminum salts),
  • oral medications (anticholinergic, antihypertensive, or psychoactive drugs may be recommended),
  • iontophoresis (mainly used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet),
  • botulinum injections (neuromodulator),
  • removal of sweat glands (including surgical, laser, or microneedle radiofrequency),
  • sympathectomy.

At Dr. Parda Clinic in Piaseczno, we most often recommend excessive sweating treatment using botulinum injections. This method is currently considered the gold standard in the treatment of excessive underarm sweating.

What is the underarm hyperhidrosis treatment like at Dr. Parda Clinic in Warsaw?

The procedure takes place in a doctor's office. Before the procedure, we perform the so-called Minor's test, an iodine-starch test. It indicates the area of hyperhidrosis.

During the procedure, the doctor injects botulinum into the sweat glands. It is necessary to perform 15-20 injections in the armpit area. The procedure takes 10-30 minutes. It is practically painless and well-tolerated by patients.

The procedure is safe, and its effects are fully reversible. You can return home immediately after the procedure. Underarm hyperhidrosis treatment with a neuromodulator does not interfere with daily activities.

Results of underarm hyperhidrosis treatment

The therapy yields good results. After the procedure, the activity of the sweat glands is temporarily blocked. This causes the skin to stop sweating. The results of the procedure are noticeable after about 72 hours, and the full effect of the treatment is visible after 7-14 days. The result lasts about 6-12 months. It has been shown that the period of neuromodulator effectiveness extends after subsequent procedures.

Contraindications to botulinum hyperhidrosis treatment

Botulinum treatments for excessive sweating are not performed in cases such as:

  • secondary hyperhidrosis,
  • neurological and muscular diseases,
  • pregnancy and lactation,
  • allergy to any component of the preparation,
  • infections,
  • use of certain antibiotics,
  • severe blood clotting disorders.

At Dr. Parda Clinic in Warsaw, patient safety is our priority. We use only proven methods for hyperhidrosis. All procedures are carried out using preparations from reputable manufacturers. The procedures are performed by an experienced aesthetic medicine doctor.
