How to care for your skin after CO2 fractional laser treatment

The beginning of spring is the last moment to take advantage of a fractional ablative laser treatment for the face. The device is used for skin rejuvenation, smoothing wrinkles, and reducing pores and scars. To achieve optimal results, proper aftercare is necessary. How to take care of the skin after a CO2 laser treatment?

What is CO2 laser

Fractional CO2 laser is one of the most effective methods of rejuvenation used in aesthetic medicine. The device's action is based on controlled damage and heating of the skin, which results in the initiation of its repair processes (including collagen production). As a result, the appearance and quality of the skin are improved. An example of such equipment is the latest generation fractional CO2 laser, which we use at Dr Parda's clinic.

Indications for CO2 laser treatment

In our facility, we use the CO2 laser for indications such as:

Treatments using the CO2 laser are most often performed on the face, neck, and décolletage. They can also be applied to other areas of the body.

When to undergo fractional ablative laser treatment

After a procedure with a fractional ablative laser, the skin is very sensitive to sunlight, which can lead to pigmentation. Therefore, treatments on the face and neck can be undergone from autumn to early spring. Outside this period, it is permissible to perform the treatment on other areas of the body. However, the patient must then be especially careful during recovery.

How CO2 laser works

During the treatment, CO2 laser light penetrates deep into the skin and is absorbed by the water in the tissues. This leads to its heating and evaporation. As a result, microscopic deficits are created in the skin. The skin's repair processes start from their edges, resulting in the production of new collagen, which remodels the skin, making it smoother, thicker, and tighter.

It is worth emphasizing that the impact of the fractional laser on the skin is pinpoint. The device "punctures" 20-25% of the treated surface, while the tissue between damages remains healthy. This technology, called fractionation, is why the laser is named as such.

Thanks to fractionation, the laser's action is more effective because higher parameters can be used. Additionally, the skin heals faster after the procedure. The risk of complications is also reduced.

Appearance after CO2 laser treatment

After the procedure with a fractional laser, discomfort appears on the treated area. The skin is rough, reddened, and slightly swollen. The patient may also experience itching, burning, tension, or dryness. These symptoms last 2-3 days. Then, the epidermis begins to peel, which is a sign of its renewal. Complete healing of the skin after the treatment takes 7-10 days and depends on its initial condition and the intensity of the session.

Skin care after fractional CO2 laser treatment

After any aesthetic medicine procedure, it is necessary to follow the doctor's recommendations. Right after the treatment with a fractional CO2 laser, the specialist usually recommends applying a cooling mask, and in the following days – applying creams that restore the skin's protective properties and avoiding irritating cosmetics. For the hygiene of the treated area, gentle detergents should be used. It is also not recommended to overuse water in this area.

While redness persists, alcohol, spicy dishes, and spices should be avoided. At least for a few days after the procedure, intense physical activity is not recommended. It is also necessary to refrain from using the pool, sauna, and hot baths.

The skin after the treatment should not be exposed to intense UV radiation for 4-6 weeks. It is also necessary to use protective preparations with a high SPF factor (minimum SPF 30).

Results of therapy with fractional CO2 laser

The CO2 laser treatment leads to the firming, thickening, and refreshing of the skin. Additionally, after the procedure, there is a smoothing of wrinkles and a reduction of pores or scars. Depending on the goal, the treatment is performed once or in a series. The full effect can be assessed 6 months after the completion of therapy.
