What is botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The preparation smooths the skin by reducing the contractility of the muscles responsible for skin creasing. The reaction resulting from the inhibition of the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine is fully reversible.
Applications of the neuromodulator
Botulinum toxin injections were initially used in conventional medicine. In 1978, they were first used to treat strabismus. The preparation, which is a prescription-only medicine dispensed by pharmacies, is still widely used in neurology, ophthalmology and rehabilitation. The rejuvenating properties of the neuromodulator were discovered by chance in the early 1990s. At that time, patients undergoing treatment for blepharospasm were observed to have a reduction in frown lines between the eyebrows.
What does botulinum toxin treat?
In aesthetic medicine clinics, the neuromodulator is most commonly used to smooth expression lines (dynamic wrinkles), which arise as a result of habitual contraction or increased tension of certain muscles.
With botulinum toxin, it is possible to correct concerns such as:
- horizontal forehead lines,
- vertical forehead line (“frown line”),
- wrinkles around the eyes (“crow’s feet”),
- wrinkles around the nose (“bunny lines”),
- “smoker’s lines” around the mouth,
- chin wrinkles,
- horizontal neck lines.
In addition, the neuromodulator has many other aesthetic applications (e.g. “eye opening”, lifting the corners of the mouth, lifting the nasal tip) as well as medical uses (including bruxism, migraine, hyperhidrosis of the underarms, hands, forehead or scalp). Research into the use of botulinum toxin in medicine is still ongoing.
Is botulinum toxin safe?
Several decades of use have allowed the properties of botulinum toxin to be very well understood. The use of a neuromodulator is safe when current standards and techniques for preparation, injection site selection, dosing and post-treatment recommendations are followed. At Dr Parda Clinic in Piaseczno, we believe that patient safety is paramount. That is why we also use liquid botulinum toxin with a reduced allergenic potential for treatments.
What does a botulinum toxin treatment look like?
A typical rejuvenation treatment using a neuromodulator lasts about 30 minutes and does not require anaesthesia. During the procedure, the physician injects the preparation into selected facial expression muscles or their immediate vicinity. The precision of the treatment can be further enhanced by using a liquid neurotoxin.
Botulinum toxin procedures usually do not leave marks on the skin. They also do not require recovery time. Immediately after the treatment, the patient may return to daily activities, while following the recommendations.
Effects of neuromodulator treatment
The neuromodulator is effective even in the case of very deep wrinkles. As a result of the procedure, the skin in the treated area becomes smoother. In addition, due to pore tightening, it appears more radiant. The muscle-relaxing effect develops gradually over 10–14 days. After this period, we recommend a follow-up consultation.
Depending on the injection site, the results of the treatment last for approximately 3–6 months. The duration of this period is individual.
When the neuromodulator is used in liquid form, the first skin-smoothing effects may be visible as early as 24 hours after the procedure. Full results, however, last 20% longer than in the case of the traditional form of the preparation (according to clinical study reports).
What does the micro treatment involve?
At our clinic in Piaseczno, we also perform botulinum toxin treatments in a micro version. The procedure involves introducing tiny droplets of a highly diluted neuromodulator into the dermis rather than into the muscles. The treatment may be used on the face, neck or décolletage.
The effects of the micro procedure include:
- reduction of skin erythema,
- smoothing of very fine wrinkles,
- reduction of sebaceous gland activity.
The treatment is also a method of reducing sweating in various parts of the body, the face and the scalp.
Benefits:
- fast results,
- minimally invasive procedure,
- minimal discomfort,
- effectiveness even in the case of very deep wrinkles,
- no need for special preparation before the procedure or recovery time.
Applications:
- softening wrinkles,
- treatment of migraines and tension headaches,
- treatment of bruxism,
- treatment of trismus,
- treatment of excessive sweating of the forehead, scalp, underarms and hands,
- relaxation of the calf muscles.
Contraindications:
- hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the preparation,
- congenital muscle diseases and neuromuscular disorders,
- pregnancy and breastfeeding,
- blood clotting disorders,
- taking certain medications and antibiotics,
- active infections and deep skin damage.
