Redefine your profile – Non-invasive chin contouring and lifting with HIFU technology

A double chin, loss of a clearly defined jawline and sagging skin in the lower face are concerns that affect many people – regardless of age or body weight. They are often genetically determined, result from natural ageing processes or weight fluctuations, while traditional methods such as diet or exercise may prove ineffective. If you want to regain a slimmer profile, firmer skin and a more defined jawline without undergoing plastic surgery, an innovative HIFU treatment may be the solution you are looking for.

At our clinic, we use advanced HIFU devices that enable safe, precise and highly effective lifting of the chin area, offering results comparable to surgical procedures, but without the use of a scalpel.

What is HIFU technology and how does it reduce a double chin?

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) uses a focused beam of high-intensity ultrasound waves. It is a major advancement in aesthetic medicine. Unlike lasers or radiofrequency, HIFU does not damage the outer layer of the epidermis. Instead, it works deep beneath the skin – reaching the SMAS layer (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), the same structure targeted by plastic surgeons during a traditional facelift.

During the treatment, focused ultrasound heats the tissues at a precisely selected depth to a temperature of approximately 65-75°C. This causes controlled, localised coagulation of collagen fibres. These micro-injuries act as a powerful stimulus for the body to initiate intensive regeneration, remodel existing structures and increase the production of new collagen and elastin. In addition, the technology can help reduce localised deposits of fatty tissue, making it particularly suitable for treating a persistent double chin.

When is the treatment recommended? (indications)

HIFU treatment in the chin and jawline area is recommended for people who have noticed a loss of skin elasticity and would like to improve the structure and definition of the lower face. It may be an excellent option if you are concerned about:

  • A double chin: Localised accumulation of fatty tissue beneath the chin that affects the profile and facial proportions.
  • Skin laxity of the neck and chin: Skin that has lost its natural density and elasticity, becoming thin and loose.
  • Loss of jawline definition (“jowls”): Sagging cheek tissue that blends into the jawline, reducing the definition of the facial contour.
  • A desire to avoid surgery: Looking for an effective but non-invasive lifting method that does not require incisions or a lengthy recovery period.
  • Anti-ageing prevention: The treatment can also be suitable for younger people (over the age of 30) as part of a strategy aimed at delaying the development of skin laxity.

What does the treatment involve step by step?

HIFU is a non-invasive procedure, and at our clinic we make every effort to ensure that the treatment is both safe and as comfortable as possible.

  1. Consultation and assessment: We begin with a medical history and an assessment of your skin condition, the thickness of the fatty tissue and the overall anatomy of the chin area. This allows us to select the appropriate transducers (cartridges), which determine the depth at which the ultrasound waves will act.
  2. Preparation of the treatment area: The skin is thoroughly cleansed. Conventional topical anaesthesia is not usually used for HIFU, as anaesthetic creams do not penetrate deeply enough. However, the advanced technology of our equipment helps minimise discomfort during the procedure.
  3. Application of gel and ultrasound treatment: A special coupling gel is applied to the skin of the chin and jawline to facilitate the transmission of ultrasound waves. The specialist then places the device handpiece against the skin.
  4. Delivery of ultrasound pulses: The device generates a series of pulses, sometimes referred to as “shots”. During this stage, you may feel gentle warmth, tingling or mild prickling deep within the tissues – this is a normal sensation and indicates that the ultrasound energy is reaching the targeted areas.
  5. Completion of the treatment: The entire procedure for the chin area usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes. Once the gel has been removed, you can return immediately to your daily activities – HIFU is often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure”.

Contraindications to HIFU chin contouring

Although HIFU is a non-invasive method, its intensive action on deeper tissue structures means that certain limitations apply. Safety is our priority, so the treatment is not performed in the following cases:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Active cancer.
  • The presence of metal implants, a pacemaker or stents near the treatment area.
  • Inflammation or active viral infections (e.g. herpes) or bacterial infections in the chin and neck area.
  • Recent fillers (e.g. hyaluronic acid) or gold lifting threads in the treatment area, as HIFU may accelerate their degradation.
  • Uncontrolled autoimmune diseases and blood clotting disorders.
  • Severe forms of acne (e.g. cystic acne) on the chin and neck.

Post-treatment recommendations and results – how should you care for your skin?

Immediately after the procedure, the skin may be slightly red and the chin area may feel mildly tender to the touch. These symptoms usually subside within several hours. Unlike volumisation procedures, HIFU results are not visible immediately – collagen remodelling takes time. The first changes may become noticeable after approximately 3-4 weeks, while the full lifting and contouring effect usually develops after 2 to 3 months. The results can be long-lasting and may remain visible for around 1.5 to 2 years.

To support the regeneration process, follow the recommendations below:

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medication: For at least 2 weeks after the procedure, avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen, ketoprofen), unless otherwise advised by your doctor. The inflammatory response induced by HIFU is part of the process that stimulates new collagen production. If pain relief is needed, use only medication recommended by your doctor.
  • Avoid overheating: For several days after the treatment, avoid hot baths, saunas and strenuous physical exercise.
  • Avoid peels: For approximately one week, do not use strong chemical or mechanical peels on the chin and neck area.
  • Sun protection: Remember to use a high-SPF sunscreen (SPF 50) to protect the skin from UV radiation.
  • Support from within: Maintain a diet rich in vitamin C, which is important for the synthesis of new collagen fibres in the body.
