Achieve an even complexion and say goodbye to redness – Laser treatment for erythema

Vascular skin, episodes of facial flushing triggered by emotions, temperature changes or spicy foods, as well as persistent erythema and visible “spider veins” – these are problems that many people struggle with every day. If left untreated, erythema may gradually progress to a more advanced condition such as rosacea. Traditional cosmetics often provide only temporary relief, masking the problem rather than addressing its underlying cause. If you dream of calm, clear skin with an even complexion, laser treatment for erythema and visible blood vessels is currently one of the most effective, clinically proven methods for achieving long-lasting reduction of these concerns.

At our clinic, we use modern, certified laser platforms specifically designed to treat vascular concerns without damaging the surrounding tissues.

What is laser treatment for erythema and how does it work?

The effectiveness of the treatment is based on a phenomenon known as selective photothermolysis. The beam of light emitted by the laser passes through the epidermis and is selectively absorbed by haemoglobin – the red pigment found in the blood within dilated blood vessels. The light energy is rapidly converted into heat, causing the vessel to heat up, contract and ultimately close permanently through coagulation. Over time, the treated vessel is naturally absorbed and removed by the body, while the troublesome redness gradually fades.

When is the treatment recommended? (indications)

Laser therapy is an ideal solution for reactive, delicate and superficially vascularised skin. It is an investment in a healthier-looking complexion. The treatment may be worth considering if you experience:

  • Persistent erythema: The skin of the face, most commonly on the cheeks, nose and chin, remains constantly red regardless of external conditions.
  • Dilated blood vessels (telangiectasia): Small, visible broken capillaries or “spider veins” on the face, neck or décolletage.
  • Episodes of flushing: Sudden sensations of heat and intense facial redness triggered by stress, temperature changes, physical activity or alcohol.
  • Rosacea: Especially in its early erythematous stage – a series of treatments may effectively help limit further progression of the condition.
  • Cherry angiomas: Small, raised, red vascular lesions on the face and body.

What does the treatment involve step by step?

The procedure is quick and designed with patient safety in mind. Each stage is carefully planned to ensure maximum treatment effectiveness.

  1. Detailed consultation: The doctor assesses the extent of the problem, the depth of the vessels and their diameter. This allows the device parameters to be selected precisely.
  2. Preparation (without anaesthesia!): The skin is thoroughly cleansed. Importantly, anaesthetic creams are deliberately not used during vascular laser therapy. These products can constrict blood vessels. Their use could make the vessels less visible to the laser beam and significantly reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
  3. Laser procedure: The patient wears special protective eyewear. The specialist places the laser handpiece against the skin and delivers a series of light pulses. The sensation may resemble gentle pinpricks or the snap of an elastic band. To minimise discomfort, our lasers are equipped with advanced contact cooling systems that immediately soothe the skin.
  4. Completion: The treatment itself takes only 15 to 30 minutes. At the end, a soothing preparation and sunscreen are applied to the treated area.

Contraindications to laser treatment

Safety is always our priority. Due to the use of a powerful beam of light, the treatment is not performed in the following cases:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Recent tanning (sun exposure, solarium or self-tanning products) – a minimum of 4 weeks should pass before the treatment.
  • Use of photosensitising medications and herbs (including St John’s wort, calendula, certain antibiotics and antidepressants) – these should be discontinued 2-3 weeks beforehand, in accordance with medical advice.
  • Treatment with oral retinoids (e.g. isotretinoin) – a break of at least 6 months is required.
  • Use of creams containing retinol or acids on the treatment area (discontinue 2 weeks beforehand).
  • Active viral infections (e.g. herpes), bacterial infections, skin cancers or epilepsy.

How should you care for your skin after the treatment? (post-treatment recommendations)

After leaving the clinic, the skin may be red and slightly swollen, which is an expected reaction to the heat generated during the procedure. These symptoms usually disappear within a few days. It is important to remember that treated vessels are absorbed gradually, which may take up to 3-4 weeks. To achieve optimal results, we usually recommend a course of 3 to 5 treatments. To maintain the results, the following recommendations should be followed carefully:

  • Strict sun protection: Sunbathing must be avoided for at least 4 weeks. Daily use of SPF 50+ sunscreen is essential. UV radiation may cause difficult-to-treat pigmentation in sensitised skin.
  • Avoid overheating the skin: For 7-14 days, avoid saunas, hot baths, strenuous physical activity, alcohol and spicy foods. These factors strongly dilate blood vessels, which may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment and contribute to the reopening of previously closed “spider veins”.
  • Gentle skincare: Wash your face with cool water, never hot water. Avoid peels, sonic cleansing brushes and vigorous rubbing with a towel.
  • Prevention: Between treatments, consider skincare products containing vitamin C, vitamin K or butcher’s broom extract to help support the condition of blood vessel walls.
