Treatment of excessive underarm sweating

When people hear of treatment of excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis), many of them will think about a prolonged treatment programme, which is not always fully successful.  Although this problem, caused by excessive sweat glands activity, may affect as many as 3 percent of the general population, few people are aware of the ways to manage it. Doctors often prescribe pharmaceuticals which may block perspiration over the entire surface of the body, while the actual problem affects a small portion only. However, there are alternative methods available for eliminating this annoying and often embarrassing issue, even for months. Botox is used at an increasing frequency in hyperhidrosis treatment, both within the underarm area and other areas of the whole body.

Excessive sweating is a very common problem, caused by hyperactivity of sweat glands. Sweating as such is a natural body response, helping the body maintain its right temperature. All humans sweat, particularly in stressful situations, after physical effort, and as a consequence of high temperature. However, if sweat is produced in such volumes that hinders your daily functioning, we can speak of hyperhidrosis. It is most commonly encountered around the underarm area, causing badly looking stains, which are highly uncomfortable for many people. Sweat may also have an unpleasant odor.

Using botulinum toxin, or the so-called botox, can free you from the problem of excessive sweating for long months. The substance applied to spots where sweat is produced extensively blocks the nervous impulses exciting the sweat glands. A topical anesthetic cream is applied in advance, and the medication is given through an extremely thin needle. The injections leave tiny traces after treatment, which will perish very soon. A single session is sufficient to accomplish the desired effect, and such sessions should be repeated in 6- to 12-month intervals, depending on the length of the toxin activity in a specific patient.

Botox treatment is highly effective in excessive underarm sweating. Statistics show that as many as 80 percent of subjects respond well to this treatment method and appreciate the effects. It is a great alternative for antiperspirants, with their temporary effect, and for oral medications which will block sweat production across the entire area of the body and are known for their diuretic properties.
