Excessive sweating of the hands is a common form of hyperhidrosis. This disorder may interfere with social interactions and the performance of everyday tasks. There are many methods of treating this problem. One of them is the use of botulinum toxin injections (a neuromodulator).

What is palmar hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweat production. The problem often affects the hands. It is usually bilateral in nature. This disorder leads to discomfort and negatively affects social and business interactions. In some cases, it may make basic activities difficult, such as writing, preparing meals or using touch screens.

The causes of hyperhidrosis often lie in genetics, which is why people with this condition notice the first symptoms already in childhood. With age, the symptoms tend to become more pronounced.

How is palmar hyperhidrosis treated?

Patients struggling with excessive sweating of the hands have several types of therapy available to them.

Methods of treating palmar hyperhidrosis are divided into:

  • topical,
  • systemic,
  • procedural.

Among the latter, one of the methods that provides beneficial results is botulinum toxin injection therapy.

What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When administered by injection, it temporarily blocks the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions and in the sympathetic nerve fibres that innervate the sweat glands. Thanks to the latter property, it can be used in the treatment of excessive sweating. The preparation is characterised by proven efficacy and safety. It has been used in many fields of medicine for several decades.

What does treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin look like?

The procedure involves administering the neurotoxin into the areas affected by the problem. It requires multiple intradermal injections with a needle. To improve patient comfort, the treatment area is numbed with a cream, spray and ice packs.

The areas that require treatment are identified using the iodine-starch test (the so-called Minor’s test). It involves applying iodine to a selected area of the body and then dusting it with starch. The area affected by excessive sweating turns brownish-purple.

Results of treating palmar hyperhidrosis with a neurotoxin

After the procedure, the skin in the treated area does not sweat at all. The effect is noticeable immediately. The results last for 6–12 months, depending on individual factors.

Who is treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis with a neuromodulator for?

Neuromodulator injections are among the minimally invasive and safe methods of treating palmar hyperhidrosis. At Dr Parda Clinic in Warsaw, we also perform this procedure in children and adolescents of school age.

However, due to the possibility of temporary weakening of the hand muscles, the procedure is not recommended for people whose work requires a high level of manual precision, such as watchmakers or professional musicians.

We also do not administer botulinum toxin to patients with hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the preparation and/or with diseases that cause muscle weakness.
