According to statistics, up to 90% of people may have scars. They form as part of the wound-healing process. They may be a “reminder” of acne, chickenpox, injury, surgery or burns. Some people accept them and view them as an individual characteristic. Others consider them a defect, especially if they are located in a visible area, such as the face. What are the indications for scar treatment?
At first glance, scars may seem to have no effect on health. In reality, they may impair the function of specific areas or organs. How does microneedle radiofrequency (RF) work?
Microneedle radiofrequency works by combining two mechanisms – microneedling and intense heating with radiofrequency current. The treatment strongly stimulates the skin’s regenerative capacity, including collagen production. Provided that it is performed by an experienced physician, microneedle radiofrequency is well tolerated by patients and highly effective.
The procedure does not cause burns to the epidermis, because the current flows through the needles of the device only after they have penetrated the skin. For this reason, microneedle RF involves minimal recovery time.
The results of the treatment may be divided into immediate effects and those visible after 3–6 months, during which new collagen is formed in the skin. Microneedle radiofrequency is a year-round treatment.

Thanks to its mechanism of action, microneedle RF makes it possible to naturally rebuild tissue loss. The treatment is recommended for reducing post-acne scars on the face and body.
The effectiveness and safety of microneedle radiofrequency in the treatment of moderate and severe post-acne scars have been confirmed in numerous studies. Research findings also show that the treatment of atrophic scars with microneedle RF is associated with a high level of patient satisfaction. This is probably due to the fact that, in addition to reducing scars, the treatment also results in skin firming and rejuvenation.
The use of microneedle RF in the reduction of other types of scars
Microneedle radiofrequency may also be used for the removal of scars left after the excision of larger skin lesions, such as boils. Such scars usually require additional filling, for example with hyaluronic acid or the patient’s own fat.
In the case of post-surgical scars, the treatment of choice is ablative fractional CO2 laser, although microneedle RF is sometimes used as an additional option. A similar approach is used in the treatment of scars after injuries, cuts, accidents or burns. Raised scars, known as hypertrophic scars, which are characterised by excess tissue, are treated with injections (for example with steroids) or laser therapy.

If the scars are small, we perform microneedle radiofrequency treatment without anaesthesia. For larger scars, we use an anaesthetic cream. An advantage of this procedure is the rapid healing process and the lack of a need for recovery time.
After the treatment, erythema and swelling may occur. However, these adverse effects are usually mild and temporary – most often they subside within 24 hours. This allows the patient to return quickly to work and other everyday activities.
How long does scar treatment take?
Scar treatment is a process that requires both the physician’s experience and the patient’s patience. It may take several to several dozen months. Usually, several microneedle radiofrequency treatments are recommended. It is also often necessary to use other techniques.
