Hyperhidrosis is a disorder characterised by excessive sweating that occurs independently of temperature. The problem often affects the forehead and scalp. This condition causes discomfort in social situations, contributes to skin infections and lowers overall quality of life. There are, however, several treatment options for hyperhidrosis. At Dr Parda Clinic in Warsaw, we use botulinum toxin injections for this purpose.
What is hyperhidrosis?
Sweating is a physiological process that serves thermoregulation. However, 1% to 3% of people struggle with hyperhidrosis. This is a condition in which the body produces more sweat than it physiologically needs.
Excessive sweating is a significant problem. Its symptoms can be very troublesome and may interfere with the patient’s daily functioning. The negative impact of hyperhidrosis on quality of life is comparable to that of chronic skin diseases such as psoriasis.
Hyperhidrosis also disrupts the skin’s natural defence mechanisms, which may result in local skin infections of various origins.
Forehead hyperhidrosis and its consequences
Hyperhidrosis often affects the forehead area and the scalp. This condition is particularly troublesome because it is difficult to conceal. It interferes with daily life, especially in social and professional interactions. It is often mistakenly interpreted as nervousness, physical exertion or poor health.
Excessive sweating of the forehead also contributes to undesirable shine, which lowers self-confidence and may lead to issues with self-acceptance. In addition, excess sweat may accumulate in the pores, causing blockage and the development of comedones.
Treatment of forehead hyperhidrosis
Treatment of hyperhidrosis depends on the type of the disorder. Specialists distinguish between primary hyperhidrosis, which is not associated with a coexisting disease, and secondary hyperhidrosis, which results from an underlying condition or a physiological process such as menopause. In cases of secondary hyperhidrosis, management involves treating the underlying cause.
The following are used in the treatment of primary hyperhidrosis, including hyperhidrosis of the forehead and scalp:
- topical agents (classic antiperspirants containing aluminium salts have limited use in treatment involving the forehead, face or scalp due to their frequently irritating effect),
- oral medications from various therapeutic groups,
- minimally invasive procedures and surgical operations.
Among the methods in the last group, physicians increasingly recommend botulinum toxin injections.
Botulinum toxin in the treatment of forehead hyperhidrosis
Botulinum toxin (a neuromodulator) is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This preparation is widely used in neurology, ophthalmology and aesthetic medicine. By inhibiting the release of acetylcholine from nerve fibres, botulinum toxin causes temporary blockade of the neuromuscular junction. In a similar way, it also reduces sweat secretion.
Neuromodulator treatment, when performed by an experienced specialist, is considered an effective and safe method of managing hyperhidrosis. Botulinum toxin injections provide longer-lasting results than topical treatment and do not require invasive surgical procedures, which carry a risk of complications.
Botulinum toxin therapy for hyperhidrosis can be performed in the forehead area and/or scalp, as well as in other parts of the body.
What does treatment of forehead hyperhidrosis with a neuromodulator involve?
The procedure is preceded by a medical consultation, which allows the specialist to rule out any contraindications to treatment.
On the day of the procedure, the patient is properly prepared. The injection sites are identified using Minor’s test, which involves covering the skin with iodine and then with starch. Areas with excessive sweat gland activity develop a dark discoloration. This allows the physician to inject the neuromodulator precisely into the areas that require treatment.
The procedure is almost painless thanks to the use of an anaesthetic cream and cooling the area to be injected with ice.
Effects of botulinum toxin treatment for forehead hyperhidrosis
Treatment of forehead hyperhidrosis with a neuromodulator provides many benefits and is associated with a high degree of patient satisfaction. The procedure locally inhibits sweat secretion. As a result, it restores comfort and increases self-confidence.
The effect is noticeable immediately after the procedure and lasts from 6 to 12 months. This duration depends on the individual characteristics of the person undergoing treatment.
