Hyperhidrosis treatment

Sweating is a natural physiological process designed to control body temperature and prevent overheating but sometimes it can turn into hyperhidrosis: a condition making the normal living much more difficult. The ailment not only causes discomfort but also involves social inconvenience and degradation of the quality of life. The application of medicines or antiperspirant products is often ineffective. The injection of botox, the treatment that has been unceasingly popular since many years because of its effectiveness and minimum invasiveness, provides an answer. Botox can be applied to the forehead, scalp, nose, armpits, palms and feet.

How can botox help? The substance irritates nerve endings and, therefore, causes denervation of perspiratory glands with consequent limitation of secretion of sweat. The result shows up after just a few days and the patient can enjoy freedom and comfort for approx. 6 months, depending on botox dose.

Hyperhidrosic areas are identified before the procedure using the Minor test that consists of application of tincture of iodine and of potato flour to the skin. After several seconds, the places affected by hidrosis get darker. The injection of an adequate dose of botox is usually painless but much depends on the patient’s sensitivity, so the place of application can be anesthetized with a special cream or with ice. The procedure can cause local discomfort or swelling but, apart from that, has no other adverse effects.

One session is enough to provide the expected results and the treatment should be repeated every 6 to 12 months.
